Bedless Psychiatry: Rebuilding Behavioral Health Service Capacity

With deinstitutionalization came the unfulfilled promise of community psychiatry and new powerful and safe medications that would finally free society of the need for inpatient psychiatry. The lack of a comprehensive continuum of care for mentally ill individuals—which should include hospitals for seriously mentally ill people—represents an injustice. Dr. Sisti will offer recommendations to increase bed capacity and to advance "conceptual parity"—where mental and physical health are indistinguishable as health care services and priorities. Achieving conceptual parity will require not just behavioral health providers, but all clinicians.
