Bedless Psychiatry: Rebuilding Behavioral Health Service Capacity
With deinstitutionalization came the unfulfilled promise of community psychiatry and new powerful and safe medications that would finally free society of the need for inpatient psychiatry. The lack of a comprehensive continuum of care for mentally ill individuals—which should include hospitals for seriously mentally ill people—represents an injustice. Achieving conceptual parity will require not just behavioral health providers, but all clinicians.
