Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center awarded an
‘A’ for patient safety by the Leapfrog Group
BURBANK (Nov. 7, 2019) – Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center was awarded an ‘A’ today by a national nonprofit organization committed to quality and safety in the nation’s hospitals.
The independent Leapfrog Group’s Hospital Safety Grade measures achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care.
Providence Saint Joseph in Burbank has implemented a number of initiatives to build upon excellence in patient safety, including improvements in infection prevention. These efforts have been shared throughout the Providence St. Joseph Health system and beyond.
“This top score is the result of the steadfast focus and hard work on patient safety and infection prevention by our caregivers and providers throughout our ministry. I am incredibly proud of the effort everyone has put in to accomplish this goal,” said Kelly Linden, chief executive of the Burbank hospital.
“For 75 years, people in this community have entrusted us with their lives and we are relentless in our work to hold that trust.”
The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The safety grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to all general hospitals across the country based on their performances in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.
“‘A’ hospitals show us their leadership is protecting patients from preventable medical harm and error,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes genuine commitment at every level – from clinicians to administrators to the board of directors – and we congratulate the teams who have worked so hard to earn this ‘A.’”
Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital safety grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
“I want thank all of our caregivers and providers for their dedication on the journey to achieving a Leapfrog grade ‘A,’ ensuring we provide clinically excellent care with compassion to all of our patients and their families,” Linden said. “Each of them has helped to fulfill our promise to our patients to ‘Know me, care for me, and ease my way.’”
